In Greek mythology the Symplygades were a pair of clashing rocks at the entrance of the Bosphorus. The Argonauts, in their quest for the Golden fleece, had to get through it and sought advice from a blind prophet, Phineas, who advised them to release a dove before attempting the crossing.
Jason released the dove and it flew successfully through the rocks although some of its tail feathers were lost to the snapping rocks.
The argonauts got through the rocks by rowing with all their might as the rocks rebounded - they only lost a small ornamental piece of the ships stern.
I hope that the analogy with today's financial landscape - and the straits of Hormuz through which oil supplies flow - is obvious! If we get through successfully the Golden Fleece - economic recovery - awaits.
The risks are, however, enormous - recession, high inflation and toxic monetary policy choices, which will further hamper the financial landscape.
I also like the idea of the dove - a peaceful settlement of the Iran war would certainly get us through the clashing rocks - and the straits of Hormuz - more easily.
Panicos Demetriades
Professor of Financial Economics, University of Leicester, University of Leicester
Professor of Financial Economics, University of Leicester, University of Leicester
Panicos Demetriades is Professor of Financial Economics at the University of Leicester, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus and former Member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank.
After studying economics in the UK, Panicos worked at both the central bank in his native Cyprus, and in various academic posts in Britain. He was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus just as the country struggled with the aftermath of the financial crisis. The Cypriot economy had been hit by the global downturn as well as falls in tourism, shipping, property, and its offshore banking sector. The country negotiated a bailout which saw the EU and IMF impose a levy on bank deposits that shook market confidence in the system and threw the viability of the whole economy in to question.
In his book Diary of the Euro Crisis in Cyprus: Lessons for Bank Recovery and Resolution Panicos looks at the political, regulatory and economic lessons from the crisis. He considers the decisions faced by politicians in Cyprus and across Europe, the fragility of the banking sector, and the role of Russian money in buying up the country’s largest bank.
Now one of Europe’s leading and most widely read economic writers Panicos examines a range of financial and economic issues from the detailed workings of national banking systems to a broader outlook for industry and the policy decisions that could affect it. He delivers an insight into the politics and economics of the Eurozone, and the possible outcomes for a post-Brexit UK and EU. With an extensive knowledge of global economic and banking systems, particularly those of Asia and Africa, he looks at the prospects for global growth, investment and regulation. Having had to unravel some of the dealings between Cypriot banks and Russian investors he can also provide revealing insights into everything from how Russian money is destabilising European finances and the euro to alleged political interference in the US and elsewhere.
As the industry’s most experienced Chief Risk Officers look ahead, one question looms large: how do we ensure the next generation of credit leaders is ready for the next crisis?
This keynote brings together the UK’s top CROs for a candid discussion about legacy, leadership and longevity in credit risk management. What hard lessons from 2008, and the pandemic, must not be lost? What instincts and interventions will tomorrow’s CROs need when stability turns to stress?
Moderated by a peer CRO, this session will explore how we preserve institutional memory, strengthen decision-making under pressure, and build a culture that passes knowledge forward rather than letting it fade.
Because the strength of our industry tomorrow depends on what we choose to share today.

Risk decisioning is no longer just about approve or decline – it’s about actively serving customers fairly and transparently, while enabling sustainable, profitable growth. In this session, we explore how organisations can unlock untapped value in risk decisioning by re‑imagining credit journeys around agent‑mediated, customer‑centric decisioning. We’ll discuss how AI‑driven agents, combined with bureau, open banking and privacy‑preserving synthetic data, are transforming affordability and vulnerability assessments – enabling decisions that are not only more predictive, but more inclusive, explainable and auditable.
By better identifying risk early and supporting customers before they fall into difficulty, lenders can reduce defaults while improving portfolio quality, unlocking sustainable revenue growth and long‑term customer value. As fraud, affordability, vulnerability and credit decisioning increasingly converge, we’ll examine how a trusted, end‑to‑end decisioning can orchestrate these signals in real time – embedding compliance, accountability and transparency by design. The result is frictionless, personalised customer journeys that deliver better outcomes for customers, regulators and the business alike.

Most debt portfolios have more value in them than collections teams can reach. Not because the strategy is wrong, but because the data needed to act on it shows up too late, in the wrong shape, or not at all.
In this session we'll show you, live, how to unlock that value. We'll take your portfolio through our AI-enabled data activation in real time so you can see what activated data actually looks like in flight, and where the AI is doing the heavy lifting on prioritisation, segmentation, and next best action.
You'll leave with a clearer view of:
How your portfolio value gets unlocked in a way that aligns to your operational bandwidth and objectives, because value you can't action is value you don't recover
What this looks like for your collections teams in practice: spotting opportunities earlier, focusing on the right accounts, recovering more debt with less waste and fewer compliance headaches along the way
How teams are running this today without the usual integration overhead. No big projects. No ripping out what you already have. Just better outcomes, seamlessly integrated into your processes
30 minutes with us will unlock the best ROI of your Credit Week visit. Please note this session is for creditors & lenders only

The lending industry is at an inflection point. AI is moving from pilot to production. Agentic systems are starting to touch real credit decisions. And the pressure on technology leaders to make the right bets - build vs. buy, human vs. automated, speed vs. control - has never been higher.
In this fireside chat, join nCino and guests for an honest conversation about what it actually takes to modernise a specialist lender: what the future looks like, how you tool an organisation for it, and why the human judgement at the heart of credit doesn't disappear - it just has to work differently.

a Consumer Duty has shifted the industry requirement from "signposting" to "Sustainable Affordability." Helen Boardman, Executive Director of Utilita Giving, presents the longitudinal results of the 'One Call That’s All' (OCTA) framework, a proprietary "stabilisation engine" designed to move customers from acute crisis to long-term financial resilience.
This session moves beyond theory to show how a coordinated, 12-month integrated casework model replaces the inefficient "referral merry go round" with a single, trusted point of access. Featuring a live call recording, Helen tracks a household's journey from acute debt paralysis and appliance poverty into confirmed employment and independence. As well as demonstrating how removing "Cognitive Debt Load" and restoring essential white goods crashes household stress from 48% to 11%, turning non-paying risks into sustainable earners.

Every lender talks about managing risk. But what if the real opportunity lies in the customers you're turning away?
This session challenges the credit industry's default narrative – that a tighter decision is always a smarter one – and makes the commercial case for inclusive lending as a growth strategy, not a compromise. Using Simba Sleep as a live case study, Snap Finance will reveal how one of Britain's most loved sleep brands unlocked a significant new revenue stream by rethinking how to say ‘yes’ more at checkout.
With 20 million UK adults underserved by traditional credit and mainstream lending tightening, the gap between demand and access is growing. Retailers and lenders who close that gap responsibly aren't just doing the right thing – they're winning. This session shows you exactly how, with the data to prove it.
